Dear Members of the Manchester High School Community,

As the school year comes to a close, I want to share a few thoughts about empowering our students. Throughout the year, we have worked diligently to provide young adults opportunities for reflection and growth.

Most recently, a few dozen students attended a Young Women’s Leadership Conference where the keynote speaker was Dr. Tiffany Russell, an author and researcher whose focus is personal narratives. These narratives, she believes, are the foundation of any research and teaching enterprise that endeavor to make sense of the world and one’s place within it.

In March, we hosted photographer Eunique Jones, whose “Because of Them, We Can” movement inspires students to pursue their dreams while keeping in mind the work and sacrifice of others.

Earlier in the year, speaker, educator, and community builder Calvin Terrell spent time talking about tolerance and fortitude with students, parents, and staff.

We planned each of these programs because we believe that empowering students is the key to our future, as empowered youth are more likely to be engaged in their communities. We look forward to offering more such programs next year.

Each of our students has a lot to offer. While they have all arrived at this point in high school in different ways – some with relative ease and others with a bit of a struggle — their potential is limitless. The pursuit of a better world — striving for equity, truth, and fairness – requires students who have strong critical thinking skills and are confident in their abilities.

As a school we have dedicated resources to providing opportunities for students to get support in various areas. Some of our most recent work has involved freshmen in Algebra I and Physical Science. Over the past three months members of the Math Department offered Saturday sessions to students who struggled with Algebra I during the first semester. Over 90 percent of the students enrolled in this program were successful in improving their first semester math grade. While all grades are important, student performance in Algebra I is critical, as it sets the foundation for Algebra II, the gateway to success in college mathematics. We are pleased to be able to offer targeted support based on needs determined by data and I want to commend the teachers and students involved in this program.

We offered a similar opportunity for students struggling in Physical Science. During the month of May, students struggling in that course were invited to attend after school sessions in order to improve their skills and increase their class grades. Again, the participation rate was high and the participants were successful.

As a school, our goal is to ensure that all graduates of MHS are college and career ready. College and career readiness requires a high level of skill, confidence, and engagement. We will continue to implement programs that support academic and social-emotional growth, as we believe strong public schools lead to strong vibrant communities.

Sincerely,

Matt Geary

Principal

The Construction 2 and Seminar class discovered what it takes to make a geodesic dome.

The information gained from research, presentations and discovery allowed the students to have a better understanding of how the structure works. Math is used to calculate the length of struts, as well as the number of 5 and 6 point nodes that are needed. Students then assembled the final model, but faced the challenge of locating and securing each strut.

Students were in doubt that the structure would even work but at the end were impressed with the strength of the structure and elated about completing the 12 foot project.

The US History classes are designing memorials/monuments as part of the last common core task of the year. Students took a walking tour of various memorials/monuments in the downtown Manchester area. They sketched the work and then discussed in class the positives and negatives of the work. Students then viewed a short film clip on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Students then had the task of designing their own monument\memorial and writing a description and rationale for it. Lastly, the students work was posted in the classroom and students did a gallery tour in the classroom to see other projects. These are some pictures of students on the walking tour.

It’s a nostalgic feeling isn’t it? After four years at Manchester High School we finally bury the hatchet with old enemies, laugh back at our awkward adolescence, write novels in your best friends yearbook and hold them tight because you know that from here, everything will change.

It won’t just be our haircuts or sense of style but in a couple of years we will get smarter, brighter, wiser and stronger. We will able to look back and thank the people here for the experiences. Whether it was sitting afterschool with your favorite teacher, or the three-hour conversation with your friend on the phone at 1 in the morning. These were the moments that made us revaluate our words and bring forth the times when we committed acts of altruism because we were doing the right thing.

We were all told that anything is possible if you just “dream” but as we all know… simply dreaming is not enough. My advice? Do everything in your power to make sure these dreams become reality. There will be days when giving up will seem like the only option. It isn’t, it’s the EASIER option. It is normal to feel empty some days, but I encourage you to sit in bed and tell yourself, tomorrow will get better, and you do anything in your power to make sure it is.

Seniors, thank you for making me laugh when days were unbearable. Thank you to the teachers, friends and family for making me the women I am today. You are truly an inspiration to me and I hope you know how vital you were in my development in MHS. Leadership a quality I thought I never possessed before attending Manchester high. I am so honored to have so many opportunities to speak at presentations, compete in both state and national competitions with FBLA and meet such gracious human beings.

It would be typical for me to place an inspirational quote as my last sentence. But, I believe the Class of 2013 embodies more than just another cliché. We have conquered, and dare to look challenges straight in the eye and came out victorious. For those graduating June 1st, take this moment as a humbling experience. We have so much more life to live. Meet new people, travel, laugh when all you want to do is cry and enjoy every second with your friends and family. The list of what we all could do in the future is endless, but I think it would be fitting if we all experience our own mistakes. I know I have some to make.

Never change who you are, never EVER settle for less and stay strong seniors.

Love always and forever,
